Interview with Laurent Thibault, GECO air Project Manager at IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) |
Geco air is a free smartphone app, developed by IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), to make us all more aware of pollutant emissions associated with our mobility. The aim is to help users routinely reduce the environmental impact of their journeys. We created it with the support of ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency).
Using my smartphone’s GPS, Geco air analyzes emissions relating to the journeys I undertake, whatever the mode of transport used (car, bicycle, walking, public transport).
Geco air is an innovative solution that combines information technologies with IFPEN's expertise in the field of vehicle modeling, delivering extremely accurate results. Collating all the information, Geco air provides me with a mobility score - a clean mobility barometer - every day and for each of my journeys!
The app also offers personalized advice: it helps me adjust my driving behavior in order to reduce the footprint of my journeys. It also recommends the use of “soft” transport modes, such as the bicycle, for some shorter, highly polluting journeys. By following the advice provided by Geco air, I can cut my pollutant emissions by 50%!

Geco air helps us tangibly reduce the real impact of our journeys on the environment and health, and to change our habits for cleaner mobility.
Moreover, the data generated by the community of Geco air users will give us a better understanding of atmospheric pollution near where we live, so we can help to reduce it.
So, using Geco air is a socially-responsible action reflecting a determination to play a more active role in reducing the environmental impact of transport. Because the more of us who use it, the more effective it will be!
