SWAFEA European Study Synthesis Conference

The combination of the growth in air traffic, environmental concern, oil prices and security of supply is prompting the search for new alternatives that could change the dominance of petroleum-based fuels for aviation and have the dual effect of controlling greenhouse gases and ensuring that fuel is available at an acceptable price.

Initiated by the European Commission in this context, the SWAFEA study, led by Onera, involves 18 partners, including IFP Energies nouvelles. It provides input for policymakers and information on which decisions can be based for the introduction of alternative fuels in the field of aviation.

Multidisciplinary topics have been considered: technical compatibility, environmental impact, business case and implementation strategies, feedstock selection and the effects that the production and distribution of alternative energy sources will have on society.

In addition, the SWAFEA study helps to determine the research that will lead to future European programs, as well as providing a solid base for international partnerships extending beyond Europe.

This international conference has presented the results of the investigations and trials carried out as part of the SWAFEA study and has provided a platform for discussion of the other current global initiatives with SWAFEA team members and a broad panel of other experts in the field of alternative fuels and energy in aviation.
