Panorama 2008 : "New outlets for coal: what are the risks for climate change?"

7 & 14 February 2008

The IFP annual conference has a two-fold objective of analyzing, each year, the technical and economic changes in the oil and gas industry and the impact of events on the world energy and petroleum stage, and of focusing on a major topical issue for the energy sector. This year, it aims to clarify coal-related prospects, analyze risks and obtain a better understanding of potential changes.

Given the pressure on oil and natural gas supply, coal has made a notable comeback. New outlets are being considered, such as the development of "clean coal" for electricity generation, fuel production through the CTL chain, hydrogen production, polygeneration options, and coal and biomass coprocessing.

  • Are these prospects compatible with environmental protection restrictions and greenhouse gas emission limits in particular?

  • CO2 capture and storage are one way of limiting such effects, but will the planned solutions be ready in time and will they be enough?
