SOLUTIONS FOR CLEAN, ENERGY-EFFICIENT TRANSPORTDecember 2011The Renault Midlum, an all-electric 16-ton truck, is quite simply the biggest electric truck ever put on the road for the distribution of food products in cities. A one-year trial is scheduled to begin in early 2012, with the truck supplying fresh products to Carrefour branded supermarkets throughout the Lyon area.
The vehicle boasts unmatched acoustic comfort for both the driver and local residents and is entirely eco-friendly. This non-polluting truck, which produces no local CO2 emissions and is completely silent, can carry up to 5.5 tons of goods. It has a range of 100 km and can be fully recharged in only 8 hours.
This unique vehicle is the result of close collaboration between Renault Trucks, PVI and IFP Energies nouvelles. It was developed as part of the Melodys project, with the backing of the ADEME demonstrator funds. It is part of a trial aiming to test technologies that might be incorporated into mass-produced vehicles in the future in real driving conditions.
IFPEN research primarily focused on optimization of onboard energy.

At the most recent Carnot events held in Lyon on 12 and 13 October, max perlès presented its new Carboperl system. The result of the company's first joint project with IFPEN, the system was developed to protect the interior of steel or concrete tanks or pipes in contact with motor fuels and bio-fuels, i.e. (bio)-gasoline and (bio)-diesel.
Bolstered by this success, the joint work begun with IFP Energies nouvelles continued, with a view to validating this system for current and future aviation fuels: jet fuel and bio-jet fuel. The IFP-Moteurs Carnot Institute performed all the tests on the coating and the stored fuels. The study demonstrated that Carboperl resin is fully compatible with the coatings of structures for the storage or transport of both current and future fuels.
A few projects have already been completed for the storage of biofuels in gas station tanks.

IFPEN has recently developed a numerical tool, known as the "Exergy Tool", that makes it possible to compute the available energy ("exergy") contained in the heat loss of an engine (in the exhaust gas or in the coolant, for example). This can be performed for an entire vehicle mission profile. These computations are very useful for evaluating the potential of a waste heat recovery system. More specifically, this in-house tool can be used by IFPEN for further investigations in vehicle waste heat recovery assessments.

"Through its high level skills in simulation, model-based development and model-based control, IFPEN has greatly helped Renault in the air system control of this innovative engine. We would not have succeeded without the quality of the dialogue we had and IFPEN's understanding of Renault's constraints and needs".
