A team of five students from the IFP School "Petroleum Geosciences" program (made up of geologists and geophysicists of the 2010 class) won the IBA Europe competition (Imperial Barrel Award) in Prague on 27 March 2010. Competing against 13 European universities and engineering schools, they estimated oil reserves on a block in the Gulf of Mexico based on real industrial datasets and presented their findings in front of a panel of industry experts.
The team went on to represent Europe in the world final, in which all regional winners competed, on 8 and 9 April in New Orleans, during the International AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) Congress.
The IFP School team competed against North American universities (Colorado School of Mines, San Diego, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Calgary) and winners of other regions (China University of Petroleum (China), KFUPM (Saudi Arabia), EAFIT (Colombia) and the University of Obafemi Awolowo (Nigeria).
IFP School were the outright winners of the competition with the University of Calgary in second position, followed by KFUPM and the Colorado School of Mines who came third and fourth. Results were announced on 12 April during the congress. This award is proof of the quality of IFP School students and of the training given in the School in the field of petroleum geosciences.
