With 183 new patents filed in 2008, IFP has expanded its active patent portfolio to almost 13,500. 78 patents (52 in 2007 and 39 in 2006) relate to new energy technologies (NET) - notably CO2 capture and storage and diversification of fuel sources -, representing an increase of 50% in comparison with 2007. The growing share of NET patents over the last two years reflects IFP’s capacity for innovation geared towards developing the technologies required for a smooth transition to a more efficient, lower carbon energy system.
According to the latest 2008 rankings of patent filers in France, published recently by the INPI (Institut national de la propriété industrielle), IFP has moved up two places in comparison with its previous ranking to become the 12th largest French patent filer (146 patents published - patents filed in 2008 will not be published until after June 2010). It is now in the top three French research bodies, along with CEA and CNRS.
Furthermore, according to the latest Patent Intelligence and Technology Report 2008 rankings, with 91 patents in 2007, IFP is the 6th largest French patent filer in the United States, behind Thomson Licensing, STMicroelectronics, L'Oréal, Alcatel and CEA notably. Amongst European companies, IFP is in 22nd place.
These achievements result from IFP’s active industrial development policy, designed to protect its research results and ensure technology transfer.
