Panorama 2010 - "Which raw materials for a sustainable energy system?"

Meeting the world’s increasing energy needs while maintaining a sustainable development focus represents one of the major issues of the 21st century. Even though the future energy system is still taking shape, it is now taken for granted that all available energy sources will be used: conventional energies (fossil fuels, nuclear), the use of which needs to be improved in order to reduce their footprint, and low/no carbon renewable energies.

In this context, new energy approaches are to be developed, whilst emerging technologies create new needs that make use of conventional energy sources.Certain raw materials used to a lesser extent so far (critical metals, biomass), are experiencing, or are set to experience a strong increase in demand.

This raises questions surrounding the adequacy of the raw material resources available for developing a sustainable energy system. Beyond responsible resource management issues (recycling, efficiency, etc.), what kinds of innovative solutions need to be adopted in order to set up an energy system with a low environmental impact?

Against this backdrop, Panorama 2010 will review the technical, environmental, economic and political developments which will shape the energy system of tomorrow.
