Panorama 2011 - "De l'eau pour l'énergie ! Production de carburants et d'électricité"

Water and energy are inextricably linked: while energy is vital in order to produce quality water available to as many people as possible, water also plays a part in several stages of energy production. It is this last aspect which Panorama 2011 is set to explore.

In order to produce fuels and electricity from fossil energies, uranium, biomass or solar and geothermal energies, water is required at various stages – from raw material production to their final conversion process. Water may be directly used in the processes themselves or used as a utility that may or may not be recycled and which must be optimized, or else it can be generated as a by-product of operations. Moreover, the quality of the water available or produced seldom matches the envisaged uses and often requires treatment.

The use of water in the production of energy gives rise to several questions: how do manufacturers manage the water from their operations? What solutions are envisaged to improve the current state of affairs? What are the technical obstacles as regards treating water? What are the economic and environmental implications?

Along with energy and food, water is a top priority for humanity, as was emphasized at the international conference on sustainable development in Johannesburg in 2002. It is against this backdrop and through the Panorama 2011 international conference that IFP Energies nouvelles will open the debate on the role of water in the production of fuels and electricity. With you, the speakers will address the technological, environmental, economic and political developments which will shape the energy system of tomorrow.
