CO2 capture and storage - Olivier Appert re-elected Vice-President of ZEP

Olivier Appert, Chairman and CEO of IFP Energies nouvelles, has just been re-elected Vice-President of the European ZEP platform (Zero emissions platform). ZEP, which brings together major research and industry players, public bodies and non-governmental organizations (Alstom, Bellona, BP, EON, EDF, Siemens, Statoil, Vattenfall, WWF, etc.), plays a central role in the development of CO₂ capture and geological storage (CCS) within Europe.

In particular, ZEP is behind a construction program currently being finalized, relating to around ten demonstrator projects aimed at producing electricity from fossil fuels with no CO₂ emissions. A number of technological solutions will be developed and tested on a large scale in various European countries between now and 2015, with a view to bringing them to market in around 2020. The target is to cut CO₂ emissions by 56% by 2050.

This re-election is testimony to Europe’s recognition of the major role played by IFP Energies nouvelles in the field of CCS. IFP Energies nouvelles is actively involved in the development of technologies throughout the capture, transport and storage chain, with a firm eye on their industrial application.

FP Energies nouvelles is studying new CO₂ capture methods that are less expensive and more energy-efficient. As far as storage is concerned, it is focusing on the selection and characterization of storage sites, optimization of CO₂ injection into underground reservoirs and long-term monitoring of storage.

IFP Energies nouvelles is participating in a number of projects in this field, working in partnership with research organizations and industry to overcome the many technological, economic and societal challenges involved (European Cesar, Cocate and SiteChar projects, France Nord project supported by ADEME’s (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) Demonstrator Fund, etc.).
