CO2 storage

The geological storage of CO2 and site monitoring:

  • developing industrial software for site modeling and simulation of storage complexes and their future
  • developing storage site monitoring techniques (seismic monitoring)

IFP Energies nouvelles is working on all of these options, its objective being to develop industrial software that can be used to model and monitor storage facilities and optimize the injection and storage process.

 

Coores™ simulator-modeling the hydrodynamic behavior of CO2

IFP Energies nouvelles is carrying out experimental studies in the laboratory designed to gain a better understanding of interactions between CO2, the fluids encountered and rocks. Using its significant experience in basin and reservoir modeling, IFP Energies nouvelles developed the Coores™ simulator, which models the hydrodynamic behavior of CO2 in porous media, taking into account all the geochemical and geomechanical interactions. This simulator is used on an industrial scale to carry out site assessments, as a complement to a variety of analyses including seismic and geochemical studies, core sampling and well logging, etc. IFP Energies nouvelles is implementing and testing the technologies developed on various sites: in Brazil, in partnership with Petrobras, within the framework of the Bahia project, and in Lacq, Southern France, within the framework of the project led by Total.

 

Storage safety and monitoring

Follow-up of CO2 injection and site monitoring are crucial to ensure storage safety. IFP Energies nouvelles is developing monitoring techniques based on seismic acquisition, mainly using the SeisMovie™ continuous monitoring system developed with CGG Veritas and GDF Suez. IFP Energies nouvelles is also continuing to work on the development of μsics software, created with GDF Suez, designed to locate passive microseismic events.

 

An emerging industrial sector

IFP Energies nouvelles is also supporting the emergence of an industrial sector dedicated to CO2 transport and storage. In 2007, it joined forces with BRGM and Géostock to create Geogreen, a company offering the industry players concerned a broad range of services covering the entire chain, from transport to geological storage of CO2, from upstream expertise to engineering and project development. In the longer term, it will offer services for the operation, monitoring and maintenance of injection sites, along with follow-up services related to the closure of storage sites.
