The ever-increasing consumption of plastic in numerous sectors has impacts on the environment and our health. In order to minimize these impacts, recycling is an essential tool alongside efforts to reduce consumption and reuse plastic objects in line with the 3Rs principal: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Negotiations on a treaty to combat plastic pollution continue, with a majority of countries supporting the introduction of some form of more or less restrictive legislation. The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets ambitious targets: recycle 55% of plastic packaging by 2030, and incorporate 30% recycled material in PET bottles.

Despite this growing awareness, just under 10% of plastic is currently recycled, with the bulk of recycled plastic coming from mechanical recycling.

In order to increase recycling capacities, it is necessary to mobilize all players in the value chain, develop advanced recycling technologies to operate alongside mechanical recycling, improve the recovery of recycled raw materials and introduce a more ambitious regulatory framework.
 

This IFPEN event will be an opportunity to tackle the following questions:
-    What challenges are encountered at various stages in the value chain (collection, sorting, integration of recycled materials)?
-    What sort of cost reductions can be expected from industrial scale-up?
-    What are the technical, economic and environmental constraints?
-    What form of legislation is required to promote the development of new recycling sectors?
