Press release
Paris, June 30, 2026
Valorhiz, IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) and CCARBON have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop scientific and technological cooperation focused on soil carbon.
This initiative builds on the work carried out within the Sustainable Soil Carbon Lab (SSCL), a joint laboratory established by IFPEN and Valorhiz in partnership with CIRAD (the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development).
A key challenge for ecosystems
Carbon plays a fundamental role in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Stored in soils, it contributes to soil fertility, biodiversity, water cycle regulation and resilience to climate change. Improving the characterization of soil carbon stocks and understanding their dynamics are major priorities for supporting ecosystem restoration, soil regeneration and climate change mitigation efforts.
Through this agreement, Valorhiz, IFPEN and CCARBON aim to develop joint research projects, share their expertise and advance knowledge on the characterization, monitoring and enhancement of soil carbon.
This collaboration brings together leading research and innovation organizations from France and Brazil to accelerate scientific knowledge and develop solutions addressing major environmental and climate challenges.
Building on the Sustainable Soil Carbon Lab
This new milestone extends the work of the Sustainable Soil Carbon Lab (SSCL), a joint laboratory created by IFPEN and Valorhiz with the support of the French National Research Agency (ANR).The laboratory aims to improve soil analysis techniques used to characterize and quantify both organic and inorganic soil carbon, while assessing the biogeochemical stability of soil organic matter.Through its innovative approach, the SSCL aspires to become a recognized international expert partner in the fields of sustainable land management, soil and ecosystem health preservation and restoration, and soil carbon sequestration.
