In a few words

Paula Coussy, an environmental economist, is Project Manager for ‘CO₂ Externalities’ at IFP Energies nouvelles. Her work focuses on the economic assessment of decarbonisation technologies and policies, with particular expertise in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

Her research aims to analyse the economic conditions necessary for the large-scale deployment of CCUS. In particular, it covers economic models of CCUS value chains, public support mechanisms, carbon markets, CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure, and the interactions between climate regulation and investment decisions.

She contributes to the development of decision-support methods for industry and public authorities to assess different scenarios for the transition to carbon neutrality. Its work forms part of several European collaborative projects bringing together research organisations, universities, industry and public sector bodies.

It regularly participates in the international Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT) conferences and helps to disseminate knowledge on the economic challenges of CCUS to both the scientific community and the general public, notably through specialist publications and public outreach initiatives.

ACT!ON CCUS (ACT – ERA-NET)

Development of an Economic-Regulatory Business Model designed to improve the profitability of CCUS projects by integrating carbon markets, public policy and national funding schemes. The project brings together academic, industrial and institutional partners in Europe and North America (Imperial College London, TNO, University of Alberta, Los Alamos National Laboratory, TotalEnergies, Wintershall Dea, etc.).

STRATEGY CCUS (Horizon 2020)
Contribution to the development of regional roadmaps for the roll-out of CCS in several regions of Southern and Eastern Europe, including an economic assessment of value chains, transport and storage infrastructure, and decarbonisation pathways up to 2050.

Regional roll-out of CCUS – Paris Basin
Contribution to the development of a regional CCUS development scenario for the Paris Basin, taking into account industrial needs, transport infrastructure, storage capacity and the expectations of local stakeholders

Economic assessment of decarbonisation policies
Development of economic analysis tools to assess the impact of climate policies (EU ETS, carbon taxation, support mechanisms) on the competitiveness of CCUS solutions and on decarbonisation strategies for heavy industry

IFPEN’s research on carbon markets and carbon externalities
Economic analysis of ETS schemes, voluntary markets and the impact of climate policies on the roll-out of CCUS.
This research informs both scientific publications and IFPEN’s expert reports.
